When you live in Brisbane, you know how wild the weather can get — from heavy summer storms to falling leaves during the dry season, and even cyclones!
1. Brisbane’s Weather Can Quickly Block Gutters
Brisbane’s combination of tropical storms, trees, and long dry periods makes gutters especially vulnerable to blockages. Leaves, twigs, and debris easily build up, especially after windy or stormy weather. In particular I find that the Gum Tree, Jacaranda, Poinciana, Bottle Brush are the usual culprits.
As you know, when gutters are blocked, water can’t drain properly — it pools, overflows, and starts to damage your roof, fascia, and walls. A gutter clean before and after storm season can save you in the long run.
2. Prevent Roof Leaks and Water Damage
Blocked gutters cause rainwater to overflow into your roof cavity, leading to leaks, damp insulation, and ceiling stains. Over time, this moisture can attract mould and weaken timber structures. I noticed this in a house I was living in, where the gutters ended up being blocked and we kept getting recurring mould in that area of the ceiling. Getting them cleared helps a lot with the prevention of mould.
3. Reduce the Risk of Fire During Dry Season
In Brisbane’s dry, hot months, leaves sitting in gutters become a potential fire hazard. Regular cleaning removes this fuel source and gives you peace of mind during Queensland’s bushfire season, especially if you're near a tree/bush line.
4. Keep Pests and Mosquitoes Away
Stagnant water and damp debris in gutters are breeding grounds for mosquitoes, and insects. In so many full gutters I clean, you'd be amazed at the cockroaches hiding away, small ant nests, and bugs I find! A clean gutter system eliminates these nesting spots and keeps your home’s surroundings safer and more hygienic.
5. Maintain Your Home’s Value and Appearance
I've found when there's water pooled in a gutter for a long time (due to the downpipe being blocked in most instances), rust starts to develop. Not in all cases of course, but in particular the older gutters. It's really important to make sure the water's flowing to prevent it rusting out. Not only that, but I often find trees, ferns, weeds of all varieties growing! Getting rid of them helps prevent damage to the roof, and also increases street appeal. With tiled rooves in particular, it's really important to make sure you don't have something like a fig tree growing, as I've had to untangle roots that have wound there way up from the gutter into and under the tiles damaging the structure of them.
